Dutch staff of United Nations ICTY & their family (organised by UN Staff Union-ICTY) staged a protestin front of Ministry of Social Affairs & Employment in the Hague on Monday 08-12-2008.

The protest was to claim a fair treatment for Dutch citizens who work for United Nations in receiving AOW (Pension) and equal Dutch Healthcare system for their children. Current policy has eliminated the rights of Dutch citizens and Permanent Resident in the Netherlands who work for United Nations to a full payment of AOW and their children is being excluded from the Dutch Health care system even if one of the partners/parents works in the Dutch system.

Staff of the UN ICTY has been trying for more than two years without avail to dialogue with the Ministry of Social Affairs on a number ofoutstanding issues related to Social Security benefits for Dutch nationals and permanent residents. UN ICTY staff yesterday delivered a letter explaining the problem to Piet Hein Donner, Minister van SocialeZaken, accompanied by their children who are penalised under the current system.

Phi-Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are situated in Krabi Province, Thailand. Phi-Phi Don (Ko Phi-Phi Don) is the larger of the two, while Phi-Phi Ley (Ko Phi-Phi Leh) is ruled out not to be developed by Thai government to preserve its nature. The Beach movie starred Leonardo DiCapiro took place in this island that causing environmental scandal against Thai's government rulings. In 2006, Thailand's Supreme Court upheld an appeal court ruling that the filming had harmed the environment and ordered that damage assessment be made. Ko Phi Phi Don was attacked by Tsunami in 2004 and majority locals still remember of this tragic event.

Phi-Phi islands have fascinating underwater life, amazing beautiful view that won't be easy to forget. In some places, it is also possible just by using snorkeling equipment. We rented a long-tail boat (Thai's traditional boat) for three days with a friendly boat captain, Kung, who speaks quite good English. He took us to several areas around Phi-Phi islands (different areas every day!) where we spotted beautiful corals and friendly fish swam around us. Totally awesome!

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

Personally, watching a fighting match in any form is not my favorite thing to do. I gave it a shot during our holiday trip in Thailand to visit Thai Boxing (in Thai it is called as Muay Thai) Match in Patong's Stadium (Phuket). I have to admit that I enjoyed capturing the pictures of a live fighting match. I guess anyone who has captured any sport competition from the beginning to the end of the match would understand how I felt. Although I am not sure whether they fought at their best effort, since too many foreign tourists watched the match, but the photos shown they did a real fight!

A bit information on Muay Thai (which I compile it from wikipedia.org), is the Thai form of a hard martial art. Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. Before the fighters start the fight, they perform Wai Khru Ram Muay, an action of respect in Thai culture. Usually Thais prefer to call it short Ram Muay or Wai Khru. Ram Muay is the way to show respect to the teachers and the trainers. Also, in past Muay Thai was usually fought in front of the king, so Ram Muay was also to apologize to the King for the brutality in fighting. During this performance, the fighters wear headband called a Mong Kon.

Saturday, 26 July 2008.

The 24th Street Parade Summer Carnaval in Rotterdam was mainly sponsored by Ortel Mobile Phone. The parade with theme "Party" was visited by 900,000 people. It was surrounded by colourful carnival clothing, dance and music from Carribean and South American (major ethnic immigrants in Rotterdam). The street parade was more than 2112 meters long with 50 trucks and more than 30 groups participated. It ended in the city hall of Rotterdam with live music from latin carribean musicians.

One of big events that showing sub cultures existence in the Netherlands.

Gili Trawangan (often called as Gili T) is the largest of Lombok's Gili islands and is the only one to rise significantly above sea level. It is 3km long and 2km wide with a population of about 700. It is also well known that population of cats are more than the population of the people. Of the Gilis, Trawangan has the most tourist facilities. On Gili Trawangan (as well as the other two Gilis - Gili Air & Gili Meno), there are no motorized vehicles. The main means of transportation are bicycles and cidomo (a small horsedrawn carriage).

I love staying at Gili Trawangan. The island has numerous bars that held party every night and delicious restaurants with fresh seafood. During the day we rent a glass bottomed boat to sail around the rest of the Gilis islands meanwhile in the evening we enjoyed the dining next to the beach accompanied by delicious cocktails. The underwater view was breathtaking and it has became the house of turtles and beautiful tropical seawater fish & corals. In this island, we just aimed to have sunbath relaxing moment, snorkeling, diving, dining and partying..

Rotterdam remembers the bombing of the city on 14 May by the Germans.
In the evening, lights were turned on throughout the city to mark the exact areas where Rotterdam was bombed.
About 800 people were killed in the bombing of Rotterdam. More than 24,000 homes were destroyed, leaving 80,000 people homeless.
